 RIGGS FAMILY MIGRATION / 1802 - 1879

The following is a chronology of the Riggs family migration from Kentucky / Tennessee in 1802 to the Riggs Settlement in Cochise County, Arizona in 1879. Beginning with the birth of Thomas Riggs, his marriage to Rhoda Casey, their children, from birth to death, including Brannick Riggs who married Mary Elizabeth Robbins through Brannick and Mary Elizabeth Riggs' migration to the Riggs Settlement. Brannick and Mary Elizabeth Riggs' children from their birth to death, the last being in 1965. 

Also includes land purchases in Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Colorado and Arizona; Civil War involvement; political positions held and buildings constructed along the way.

KENTUCKY / TENNESSEE 

1802:        (1THOMAS RIGGS (possibly Thomas Augustus Riggs) born (xxx xx, 1802 in either Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia. The most likely seems to be the southeastern portion of Kentucky which in 1820 became Tennessee or the Southwestern portion of Virginia or Northwestern portion of North Carolina)  [1802 - 01]

Possible Kentucky counties: Barren, Christian, Cumberland, Knox, Livingston, Logan, Pulaski, Warren or Wayne. (see 1802 map above)

1860:        Richwoods, Izard County, Arkansas Postoffice name was changed to Riggsville, Izard County, Arkansas. (1Thomas Riggs was named postmaster of Riggsville. (August 29. 1860). [55]

1862:        (1-4) BRANNICK RIGGS enlisted in Milam County, Texas, as a Private in the Texas Cavalry (October 1, 1862). [60]

1863:        (1-5) BARNEY KEMP RIGGS, fifth child of (1) Thomas and (1A) Rhoda Riggs (Died on February 17, 1863 at the age of 32 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.) [61] 

1863:        (1-4) BRANNICK RIGGS was wounded during a skirmish in Franklin County, Louisiana and taken to a Confederate hospital (April 14, 1863) He recovered after several months in a private family home. [62]

BRANNICK, MARY AND THEIR CHILDREN ARRIVED AT THEIR FIRST CAMP IN SULPHUR SPRINGS VALLEY IN OCTOBER, 1879.

1879: The following left Big Immigrant Canyon October 11, 1879 and traveled through Apache Pass and settled in Sulphur Springs Valley approximately four and half miles west of the current entry to the Chiricahua National Monument (their first camp) for a few months. When the spring went dry they moved approximately one-half mile north (their second camp). During their stay at the second camp in Sulphur Springs Valley they built a new residence approximately two miles east of the second camp. They then moved east to approximately three miles west of the current entry to the Chiricahua National Monument to what became known as the Riggs Home Ranch, the center of the Riggs Settlement. Today, descendants of (1-4) BRANNICK and (1-4A) MARY ELIZABETH RIGGS live and operate ranches on the same land homesteaded and purchased by the Brannick Riggs Family. [84]
